Hearing Loss and The Workplace

According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, about 20% of Americans suffer from some type of hearing loss, and at age 65, that number jumps to one in three. A large percentage of those suffering from hearing loss are in the workforce, and unfortunately most workplaces do little to assist their employees with hearing loss.

It is important to address your hearing problem and the potential impact it could have on your career before your performance begins to suffer. Don’t let pride prevent you from getting a hearing aid, and if that is not a financially viable option, consider a personal sound amplification product. PSAPs offer some of the benefits of hearing aids but at a fraction of the cost. Meet with your boss and discuss what is going on. Reassure them that you are still more than capable of handling your responsibilities, but do let them know how they might help you continue to be successful in your role. As the number of seniors in the workplace increases, businesses will need to adopt more accommodating practices for senior employees.
