Charleston County Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program – Seniors (60 and above, who reside in the Tri-county Area) tutor and/or mentor children with special needs or those deemed at risk of failure.  Seniors work in educational settings, residential, Headstart, and Day Care facilities for a minimum of 15 hours per week.  Telephone: (843) 722-4127

Alzheimer’s Association South Carolina Chapter – Trident Office – Group offers educational workshops and seminars, support groups, information and referral, and educational literature. Help Line, respite assistance program and autopsy referral information also provided. Quarterly newsletter provided. Alzheimer’s Research and Clinical Programs – A wide range of clinical drug trials and other types of research studies are offered for older adults with Alzheimer’s disease, other types of dementia, monitoring and study medicines are offered at no cost to qualified participants of clinical drug trials.Research staff members collaborate closely with the patients’ primary care physician. No referrals necessary, confidential and voluntary.

Charleston Veterans Center – Offers benefits information counseling for readjustment, marital issues, and bereavement.  In addition, homeless veteran services, job counseling and other services provided.

American Heart Association – Charleston – Seeks to prevent heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. Educational resources on preventive measures. Call or use website to find CPR trainings and other first aid instruction. CPR, BLS and ACLS classes at Bons Secour St. Francis Hospital, MUSC and Lowcountry EMS (888-277-5463). American Red Cross Emergency (Disaster) Services – Carolina Lowcountry Chapter– If someone has had a fire, etc, please be sure to ask them if they have already contacted Red Cross. If they have contacted them, do not refer them back to Red Cross. Disaster Services provides immediate emergency assistance to house fire victims; shelter team members set up and operate shelters during storm evacuations and other disasters; caseworkers interview families affected by disasters and provide financial assistance and referrals for disaster relief only. City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs Volunteer Program – Mission: The mission of the Office of Cultural Affairs is to stimulate and advocate broad public support of the arts. In efforts to make our festivals accessible to everyone, we coordinate a variety of outreach performances allowing the public to enjoy festival activities in their own environment from local and regional artists. Healthcare Information and Referral Network – Online resource directory assists in finding free and affordable medical care. The site lists doctors and specialists that accept Medicaid or uninsured patients. Program can help with information about the new Medicare Prescription Drug Program and resources for obtaining free and discounted medication or prescriptions.

Hospice Center of Charleston – The Center is a 20-bed, retreat-like, atmosphere serving medically eligible and actively enrolled hospice patients and their families with professional and compassionate end-of-life care.  Catherine Cosgrove, Executive Director

Jewish Community Center Mind, Body, and Soul Senior Program – Seniors Program features speaker and discussion periodically. Topics include current events, health, hobbies, religion and more. Light refreshments provided. The senior department includes a Friday movie, a monthly book club, Sunday brunches, WWII vets lunches, special programs and over-night trips, senior aerobics classes and much more. Monthly outings to museums, area gardens, the movies and other local places of interest are planned. Trips are frequently planned to visit sights in other cities like Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Savannah and Walterboro. Light weight work out and resistance training for the upper and lower body. This class also features stretching and relaxation exercises. Classes are held MWF. TRANSPORTATION Transportation to JCC sponsored events, medical appointments, and grocery shopping is provided for Senior Adult Members at a nominal charge. Seniors must call the JCC in advance to arrange for transportation.
