Winter Safety Tips
- Limit how much you use space heaters. Make sure space heaters are at least 3 feet away from anything that might catch fire.
- Take extra precautions to prevent falls.
- Make sure steps and walkways are clear before you walk.
- Wear shoes with non-skid soles.
- Have your walkways cleared of snow.
- Keep your kitchen stocked. In the event you may not be able to get to the grocery store, have plenty of food for at least a week or two.
- Keep an emergency kit. A winter emergency kit is necessary to have in case of power outages. Some things to keep in your kit include flashlight with extra batteries, hand warmers, battery powered weather radio, first aid supplies, matches or lighter.
- Place smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in strategic places. Test your carbon monoxide detector at least once a month each winter. Be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure including shortness of breath, nausea or dizziness, weakness, headaches and a feeling of confusion.
- Stay up to date on seasonal vaccines including the Flu vaccine and Covid booster vaccine.
- Wash your hands more often. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay physically active. Walk in place or walk around the house. Cleaning the house is also a good way to stay physically active.
