The Obama administration plans to unveil the specifics of the Brain Activity Map Project in the coming months. The aim of this initiative, which is projected to cost several billion dollars and will span 10 years, is to create a detailed map of the billions of neurons that make up the brain. Scientists hope that this in-depth study will lead to a greater understanding of mental illnesses and brain disorders like autism and Alzheimer’s disease, which will ultimately result in advances in treatments for these and other diseases of the brain.
