May is Stroke Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the risk factors, symptoms, and prevention of stroke. Let’s learn what this month means and how we can protect ourselves and our loved ones.
What is Stroke Awareness Month?
Stroke Awareness Month is observed annually in the United States during the month of May. Its primary goal is to promote public awareness and educate on the prevention of stroke. By educating people about stroke, we empower them to recognize the warning signs promptly and seek immediate medical attention.
What is a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is disrupted due to a clot or bleeding. Brain cells are deprived of oxygen and nutrients, leading to damage or death.
Common Warning Signs (Remember F.A.S.T.):
Face Drooping: Is one side of the face drooping or numb? Ask the person to smile.
Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or number? Ask the person to raise both arms.
Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.
Time to Call 911: If you notice any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately!
Reducing Your Risk: Preventing a Second Stroke
If you’ve had a stroke, you’re at higher risk for another one.
