More Research to Support the Importance of a Strong Social Connection and Preventing Social Isolation for the Elderly

 

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences followed 6,500 men and women ages 52 and older for over 7 years to determine the effect social isolation and loneliness had on mortality. Both are associated with a poorer quality of life and an increased risk for premature death. The study found that of the two factors, isolation appeared to have the greatest impact on mortality.
