Lupus awareness month is observed in May and aims to increase understanding among the general public of what the disease can do and why it’s so key to know the facts.
Lupus is an incurable disease, but treatments do exist to make living with it more manageable and improve the prognosis significantly.
Lupus is a tricky disease to diagnose because it is often mistaken for other illnesses, which means it can go detected for years without the affected person knowing. Among other symptoms, sufferers may exhibit a fever, tiredness, mouth ulcers and arthritis. A common symptom in lupus is referred to as the butterfly rash: a bright red rash that runs from the nose, under the eyes and across the cheeks.
Lupus can be diagnosed by different types of blood tests. However, The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 5 million people across the world are living with Lupus, and a large number of people do not know it.
