If cracked, dry skin plagues you every winter, simple changes could bring relief. People tend to wash their hands more frequently in the winter (we are all for healthy hand hygiene!), but it can lead to peeling, dry skin. One option is to swap out some of the suds for hand sanitizer. Leave a container of lotion next to your sink or in your bag and apply it after every wash. Invest in a lotion specially formulated to fight dry skin, such as Eucerin’s Intensive Repair Extra-Enriched Hand Cream, and put it on at night before bed so it has time to work its magic while you sleep. Don’t neglect your lips—carry a tube of chapstick with you and reapply after eating and drinking.
As tempting as it is to take long, hot showers and baths during the cold winter months, they wreak havoc on your skin’s moisture levels. Short showers using warm water are your best bet if you suffer from dry skin. If you use a lightweight lotion during the summer months, it’s time to pack it away in lieu of a thicker crème moisturizer. If you have sensitive skin, stick to products that are hypoallergenic and fragrance-free.
Using a humidifier in your bedroom can also help combat dry winter skin by increasing the moisture content of the air. They serve double duty by helping you breathe easier when you have a cold or sinus infection and can even help prevent infections because certain bacteria and viruses prefer dry air.
