Many seniors take more than one prescription medicine on a regular basis to help treat chronic health conditions. It is important to discuss all medication, OTC and prescription, as well as any supplements you are taking, with your doctor. Certain drugs and supplements can render the other ineffective or even cause potentially dangerous interactions. According to a report published online March 21 in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, over 42% of patients failed to report their supplement use to their physician. The patients cited both a fear of telling their physician and the fact that their physician didn’t ask as the main drivers behind the lack of disclosure. Being open and honest with your physician, even if they fail to ask, is the best way to protect your health.
