The first days of fall usher in some of the best times of the year in Charleston. Temperatures (and humidity!) finally drop, and we are left with beautiful weather that just begs us to spend more time outdoors. Luckily our area has no shortage of outdoor fairs and festivals this year, many of which appeal to the “young at heart.”
The MOJA Arts Festival, a celebration of African-American and Caribbean Arts, kicks off on September 25th. This year marks the 31st anniversary of the festival and explores the African American and Caribbean contributions to western cultures through live performances including jazz, classical music, dance, gospel, story telling, poetry, R&B, visual arts, theatre, ethnic foods and more. Another must-do fall festival is Southern Living’s annual Taste of Charleston at Boone Hall Plantation on September 28th. This culinary extravaganza features 50 of Charleston’s best restaurants serving up delicious samples of their finest food offerings. In addition, there will be plenty of kid-and-adult friendly beverages and activities, live music, and more.
In addition to these annual fall festivals and fairs, the Lowcountry has numerous weekly Farmer’s Markets to explore. The Charleston Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday through December at Marion’s Square in downtown Charleston. Mt. Pleasant holds their weekly market on Tuesdays starting at 3:30 pm at Moultrie Middle School. The Folly Beach Farmer’s Market is every Wednesday evening at 5:30 at The Grill on Center Street. Freshfields Village hosts a Farmer’s Markets on Mondays from 4pm-8pm. Many of these markets feature live music and prepared foods, as well as farm-fresh produce and local arts and crafts. With so many outdoor activities to choose from, there is no excuse to be inside this time of year!
