A study published in Nature Neuroscience looked at the natural brain changes that happen as we age and their impact on memory. As we get older the quality of our sleep declines due to changes in the prefrontal cortex, and these sleep changes are linked to declining memory. While sleep is not the only factor that affects memory and cognitive function as we age, it does appear to play a critical role in how we remember things.
