The South Carolina Dept. Of Consumer Affairs is warning people about gift card scams. They sometimes pose as IRS or utility companies asking for payment with prepaid cards. Another imposter scam is you are notified that you have won a prize, however first you have to use a gift card to pay fees. Since Oct. 2013, South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) received over 10,000 scam reports, and the Identity Theft Unit (IDTU) reports over $5,192,964 was stolen.
To report a gift card scam call the IDTU at 844-TELL DCA (835-5322) or visit www.consumer.sc.gov.
