Family Caregiving: Finding Balance

One thing is for certain if you’re a family caregiver–you are not alone. According to the AARP Public Policy Institute and the National Alliance for Caregiving’s 2015 report Caregiving in the U.S., over 34 million U.S. adults have provided unpaid care to an adult aged 50+ in the last year. Many of these caregivers are helping loved ones with chronic physical conditions or memory loss, and few have any professional training or experience providing this kind of care. The report also highlights the tremendous time these caregivers devote to their loved ones–on average caregivers are spending 23 hours per week on caregiving tasks–but many spend nearly twice that. Many of these caregivers are also still employed full or part time, and their caregiving responsibilities require them to take time off of work.

The physical and emotional stress of caregiving often takes its toll on the health of the caregiver. Caregivers often neglect their own doctors appointments and preventive care when they are responsible for caring for a loved one. In addition, healthy eating and exercise can also take a backseat to their loved one’s care. The good news is that we can help! Our trusted team of professional, compassionate caregivers can help share the caregiving load. If you work full or part time or just need some time to care for yourself, our dependable caregivers can give you peace of mind that your loved one is being well taken care of. We would love to help you and your family–give us a call today at 843-628-3642!

Why You Should Consider In Home Care

Have you noticed that mom and dad are just not taking care of themselves like they used to? Are bills and mail piling up around the house? Is the lawn in need of attention? Does their physical appearance indicate that maybe they haven’t kept on top of their personal hygiene? Perhaps it’s something they said—maybe even joking around—that leaves you with a nagging worry about how they are doing on their own. Sometimes it happens much more quickly, such as a cancer or Alzheimer’s diagnosis or a bad fall, and suddenly you are scrambling to find the right kind of care. You want to be there for them as much as possible but you have your career, spouse and children to take care of. Your loved one wants to retain their independence in their own home. What do you do?

Fortunately, an in-home care company such as Home Care Plus can be just what you and your loved one need. Using a trusted, respected local company helps ensure your loved one gets the best care when you can’t be there. Home Care Plus caregivers are professional, qualified, compassionate and dependable. They can help around the house with light housekeeping and meals. Our caregivers offer a helping hand with personal hygiene, medication reminders, transportation to appointments and prescription pick-up and more. Home Care Plus offers peace of mind that your loved one is safe, eating nutritious meals, taking their medications safely, and has daily companionship. The holidays can be merry, but they can also make the merriest among us feel like a grinch. If you consider your everyday caregiving responsibilities and then add decorating, baking, hosting and attending parties, shopping and more to the equation it is impossible not to burnout. And then there is the unsolicited opinion of your caregiving from siblings and other family members to deal with. So how can you make the holidays a celebration of family and friends again? Ask for help!

Let a trusted in-home care company like Home Care Plus help out this holiday season. Whether it’s for a few hours or a few days a week, our skilled, compassionate, dependable caregiving team give you peace of mind that your loved one is being well cared for while you are away. Understanding In-Home Care

While many people are thrust into the world of in-home care when something unexpected happens, others include it in their long-term health care planning discussions with professionals and loved ones. Regardless of how you’ve arrived at this point, understanding what in-home care can offer and how to go about choosing the in-home care company that’s right for you can be overwhelming. There are a few boxes to check when searching for a company.  Here is a list of common questions to ask:

  • Are they licensed and insured?
  • Do they accept most forms of insurance?
  • What type of certifications/training do the caregivers have?
  • Who will be working with the family/individual to develop a plan of care? Is it a registered nurse?
  • Do the owners of the company play an active role in the hiring process?
  • Does the company come well recommended?

Trust is a major component of being comfortable bringing someone into your house to take care of your loved one. Suzy Kuppens, founder of Home Care Plus, had first hand experience caring for her father with Alzheimer’s. She not only played the role of supportive daughter but also nurse and this gives her unique insight into what other families are going through and what they need most during this trying time.

The other question people often have is “what exactly does an in-home caregiver do?” Home Care Plus is a great option for a senior living independently at home who wants to remain at home as long as possible, those who may need help transitioning a loved one from a care facility to home, families who want to help aging parents maintain quality of life at home, but do not have the knowledge, skills or time to do the job alone, and long distance caregivers who need a local liaison to oversee care and notify them of problems. Our services include:

  • An in-person meeting with a registered nurse to develop a comprehensive plan of care
  • Arrangement and monitoring services for social activities as needed.
  • Home and or facility visits.
  • Medication oversight.
  • Accompanying client during physician/professional visits as desired.
  • Communication and reports to physicians, facility staff and other professionals.
  • Advocacy
  • Assistance with transition from home to a care facility or facility to home.
  • Assistance with filing insurance claims and with mail order pharmacy as needed.

As well as the following Home Care responsibilities:
