Eyesight and Aging: What is Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness in adults over 50 years of age.  It damages the center field of vision, and while some people lose all of their sight, many retain enough peripheral vision to go about their daily lives.  There are some treatments available to help slow vision loss, but there is little that can be done for those who have gone completely blind.  Read more in the San Francisco Chronicle’s article “Macular Degeneration a Growing Problem.”
