Pick Your Plantation!

Spring is officially here and so are longer, sunny days and warmer weather.  It is the perfect time of year to take advantage of some of the beautiful local attractions Charleston has to offer.  Charleston boasts three different plantation experiences just a short drive from town–all have gorgeous gardens in full bloom and offer a glimpse into the rich history of the region.

If you enjoy pre-Revolutionary architecture, consider visiting Drayton Hall.  This plantation is home to one of the oldest colonial houses to survive in nearly original condition.  Middleton Plantation spans some 65 acres and is home to America’s oldest gardens as well as the Azalea and Reflection Pools and Rice Mill Pond.  Magnolia Plantation has a little bit of everything—the historic Drayton family plantation home, swamps, beautiful flowering gardens and a petting zoo. The plantations have several walking tours, both self-guided as well as guided, but they also have options for those who cannot or would rather not be on their feet all day.  Middleton Plantation offers a 45 minute carriage tour of the plantation, while visitors to Magnolia Plantation can explore the 600 acres of wildlife habitats and gardens on its hour-long Nature Train tour.  Magnolia also offers a boat tour for those who enjoy a view from the water.  Pick your favorite plantation, pack a picnic, and you have the recipe for the perfect spring day!
